This page is the Lawnton fixture catalogue from Lawnton Plumbing Services: repairs, replacements, where Unitywater's responsibility stops, and what the water-efficiency rules mean for your fittings.

Repair or Replace a Tap or Toilet

Most drips, running cisterns and slow fills are repairs to a washer, a cartridge or a valve, and a crack in the tap body, the cistern or the pan is where replacing starts. That line between fixing and swapping shapes most quotes we give.

  1. Washer taps and mixers fix well

    A dripping washer tap usually takes a fresh washer or a dressed valve seat. A mixer leaking at the handle usually takes a replacement ceramic disc cartridge.

  2. Running cisterns are the same story

    A leaking or running cistern is most often cured by a new inlet valve plus a fresh outlet washer, with the cistern body left in place.

  3. A crack ends the repair

    Damage to the body or the porcelain, rather than a worn part, is where fixing gives way to swapping. A fixture on its third repair in a year can also cost less to swap than to keep fixing, and we judge each job on its own record.

The finer detail sits on the fixture pages:

Does the Water Utility Cover a Leaking Tap

No, the concealed leak adjustment leaves out water wasted through leaking taps and running cisterns, so the owner carries the loss. Unitywater's adjustment exists for bursts you can't see, under a lawn or inside a wall, not for fittings dripping in plain view.

The meter draws the boundary. Unitywater maintains the mains up to it, and every pipe and fitting past it is yours. One slow drip can bleed thousands of litres over a year, and every litre runs through your meter at full price.

Unregulated, Minor and Notifiable Plumbing Work

Only a QBCC licensee may do most of this work: a short list of small jobs is unregulated, and every other tap or toilet job is minor or notifiable work. The three categories set who does the job and what paperwork follows.

  1. Unregulated work is a short list

    Any capable person may do it, with no licence and no report needed, but the finished job still has to reach the standard the plumbing code sets. For our two fixtures it covers the jumper valve and washer in a tap, and inside a cistern, the drop valve washer, the float valve washer and the suction cup rubber.

  2. Minor work covers repairs and swaps

    Mending or swapping a tap or toilet fitting is minor work: a licensed plumber does it, no permit, no Form 4. A whole tap swap sits here too, and the QBCC guide points to that exact job as work past what an owner may do.

  3. Notifiable work covers new fixtures

    A brand-new toilet, or a toilet moved to a new spot, counts as notifiable work. No council permit applies, and we lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing. You get a copy for your records.

Water Efficiency Rules for Taps and Toilets

WELS is Australia's water-efficiency labelling scheme: every tap and toilet sold here carries a label with its star rating and its water-use figure. For rentals it also sets the flow and flush caps that decide whether an owner can on-charge water.

  1. Two marks travel together

    WELS registration puts the stars and the water-use figure on the label. WaterMark certification is the plumbing-safety mark, and a fixture needs both before we can legally fit it.

  2. Rentals carry flow and flush caps

    Before an owner can pass a full water bill to a Queensland tenant:

  • cold taps and mixers inside the home run at no more than 9 litres a minute;
  • a dual flush cistern is capped at 6.5 litres on the full flush and 3.5 on the half, averaging 4 litres or less;
  • the cap counts taps over a basin, kitchen sink or laundry trough, mixers included;
  • bath taps, garden taps and any tap filling a washer or a dishwasher sit outside it.

New builds carry minimum stars. Every new dwelling needs a dual flush toilet rated at least 4 stars, and each tap and showerhead at least 3 stars. Those minimums skip renovations, so a bathroom refresh can keep its old fittings.

The Streets Behind the Faults

Houses from the 1960s onward dominate the suburb, and a tap of that vintage often sits on galvanised pipework that has seen better decades. The 1980s group-title complexes off West Dianne Street add shared water arrangements behind each unit.

Our run covers the same streets most weeks. We pass Lawnton State School on Todds Road, work out to the aged-care home on Francis Road, and look after staff amenities around the Paisley Drive and Lawnton Pocket Road industrial estates.

Questions About Taps and Toilets

Call (07) 3524 0766

Is a dripping tap or running toilet an emergency?

No, neither counts as an emergency. Both hold until a scheduled visit, but each wastes water until it's fixed. Water that won't shut off is urgent: close the isolation valve or the meter tap first, then use our emergency plumber page.

Can I replace a tap washer or cistern washer myself?

Yes, but only for the small parts on the QBCC's unregulated list, and the finished work still meets the standards the code sets. A whole tap or toilet swap is licensed work, and so is any new installation.

Do I need a licensed plumber to replace a tap in Lawnton?

Yes, a tap replacement is licensed work. Installing a new fixture, say a toilet, is notifiable work, and the plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of the finish.

What do WELS stars on a tap or toilet mean?

WELS registration means the product is registered for water efficiency and carries a label with the star rating and the water-use figure on it. A tap, toilet or cistern also needs WaterMark certification, which is what lets us fit it legally.

Does Unitywater cover a leaking tap or toilet?

No, the utility's adjustment scheme doesn't help there. It exists for hidden bursts only, so a dripping tap or a running cistern stays on your water account, and the repair is yours to arrange.

Who looks after the pipe to my tap, me or the water utility?

Unitywater maintains the street mains and the meter itself. Every pipe and fitting from the meter to your taps is yours, so repairs on that side are yours to arrange.
