How to Find a Water Leak
How to find a water leak usually comes down to two checks. The meter tells you whether water is escaping at all, and a slow walk through the property narrows down where. Both are yours to run before anyone is called.

Why Lawnton pipes leak
Most of the suburb went up through the 1960s and 1970s, so supply lines have spent decades in reactive clay that moves as it wets and dries, working on buried joints.
The ground adds its own confusion
Low land near the rivers holds moisture long after rain, which blurs the outdoor clues. Our Lawnton plumbers run these hunts week after week.

Rule a Leak In or Out at the Meter
With every tap and appliance shut, record the meter reading, leave everything alone for at least one hour, then read it a second time: any movement means water is escaping somewhere on the property. The dial only turns as water passes through it. A change with nothing running cannot come from normal use.
Set the test up properly first:
- Shut off every outlet that draws water: taps, the hose and irrigation, the washing machine, the dishwasher, and any fridge connected to the mains.
- Photograph the numbers, red digits included, and leave the meter's own stop tap turned on.
- Run nothing for the hour, then compare the photos.
A reading that has moved needs a licensed plumber to investigate. Unitywater does run a program that flags unusually high use and contacts customers where it can. The utility still asks customers to read their own meter rather than count on that program.
A bill that climbs with no change in your habits is the usual first clue, and this test sorts a leak from ordinary use.

Room by Room Inside the House
Work the indoors in a set order: toilet cisterns first, then taps and showers, then the connected appliances, finishing on the walls, ceilings and floors.
The cistern dye test settles the biggest suspect in minutes. Add a few drops of food colouring to the cistern, leave it to sit without flushing, and look in the bowl. Colour reaching the bowl means the cistern leaks past its seal; flush afterwards, because the dye will not stain ceramic.
The visible fittings. Taps and shower mixers should sit fully off and dry, with no weeping at the base. A fridge connected to the mains and the hot water system both deserve a look underneath and behind.
The surfaces carry the quieter signs: damp or stained plaster, a musty smell in a closed room, swollen or peeling paint, and a warm patch underfoot. That warm patch matters most on a slab floor, where it often marks a hot line that has split beneath the concrete. Plenty of the older brick-veneer builds here run supply lines through the wall cavities, so a stain can climb the plaster before anything shows at a fixture.

Taps, Tanks and Wet Ground Outside
Outside, work from the garden tap to the tank to the ground.
Garden taps and hose fittings
A slow drip from a garden tap can lose thousands of litres over time. Feel the spout and each fitting with the tap shut.
A rainwater tank on town water
Check the tank is not topping itself up from the mains. A failed solenoid keeps drawing quietly, and a licensed plumber checks that part.
The ground
Spongy lawn, one patch greener than its neighbours, and paving lifted out of level all point below.
Read the lawn against the local water table. Low ground near the rivers stays damp after wet weather anyway, so the telling sign is a patch that stays soggy right through a dry spell. Water services laid for the suburb's earliest houses are decades old now, and a hairline split beneath a front crossing can soak the verge for weeks before anyone joins the dots.
Got a pool? A bucket settles it. Stand a bucket of pool water on a pool step with the levels matched, mark both waterlines, and keep the pool unused for 24 hours before comparing.
A pool that drops further than the bucket holds a leak. Matching drops are just evaporation.

Who Fixes the Leak You Find
Read the hunt's results before anything else: a dripping tap, a running cistern or a weeping joint, in plain sight, is the likely culprit. A dial that creeps on after every room and fitting checks out clean points to water escaping where no hunt reaches: under the lawn, under the drive, or behind tiling inside a wall cavity.
Responsibility follows the meter inwards. Every pipe and fitting past the meter belongs to the property owner to maintain, while Unitywater looks after the public mains and the sewer beyond the boundary. Fixing a split or cracked pipe counts as minor work in Queensland: a licensed plumber performs it, needing neither a permit nor a Form 4.
One leak stays invisible by nature, and it is the expensive one. The buried kind wastes thousands of litres a day with no sound and no puddle, until the account jumps or the plaster gives way. Narrowing that kind to one stretch of pipe is a job in itself, and our leak detection page sets out how we run it.

When to Call a Plumber
Ring (07) 3524 0766 once the dial creeps and the house hunt turns up nothing, or the moment damp, warmth or soggy ground appears without a cause you can name. Lawnton Plumbing Services narrows a hidden leak to one stretch of pipe, and sets out what the finding means for your water account.
Hidden Leak Questions Answered
Call (07) 3524 0766How do I find a hidden water leak in my home?
Start at the meter with every outlet shut, then check the toilets, taps, showers and appliances inside, and the garden taps, tank and ground outside. A dial that creeps while the house stands quiet points to a leak out of sight, and whatever the hunt cannot reach belongs to a licensed plumber.
Who is responsible for a hidden leak at my Lawnton home?
You are, as the property owner: every pipe past the meter, concealed leaks included, falls to you to maintain. Unitywater looks after the public water main and the sewer beyond your boundary.
Will Unitywater reduce my bill for a hidden leak?
Yes, in the right circumstances. Unitywater may adjust an account where the leak stayed hidden from view, sat on the owner's side of the meter, was repaired in time, and an invoice from the licensed plumber shows the work. Dripping taps and running toilets never qualify.
Can I fix a leaking pipe myself?
No, repairing a broken pipe is minor work, and only a licensed plumber may do it. The QBCC's unregulated list is short: tap washers, cistern washers, shower heads and water filter cartridges. Anything past that stays with a licensee.
